"Marine Corps Base Quantico"

Arrive: Wednesday September 16th

Quantico Base Tour: Thursday September 17th, 2009

Leave for "Official" 7th Engineer Battalion Location: Friday September 18th, 2009

Some of our plans for the 2009 Reunion needed to be changed. Because of the change of location, we were not going to be able to have a tour of Quantico. In order to not interfere with the “main” reunion plan, we are offering an opportunity to still have that base tour at Quantico, and to enjoy an evening with Col. Harris at the Globe and Laurel Restaurant.

Tentative plans are to have a Base tour on Thursday, September 17. Dinner that evening would be held at the Globe & Laurel Restaurant, located just a short drive from the Crossroads Inn. It is suggested that you arrive in Quantico on Wednesday, spending Wednesday and Thursday evenings at the Crossroads Inn. Friday would be the departure for the official reunion in the Washington, DC area. A bus ride from the Washington, DC area to the National Museum of the Marine Corp in Quantico will be part of the reunion plans.

The Globe and Laurel Restaurant is an establishment owned and operated by Marines. The ambiance is true Marine Corp all the way.

The cost for your hotel, meals and any entertainment would be completely your responsibility.

Please let Dave Haunty know of your interest by February 15, 2009, either by phone (724) 285-2995) or e-mail, at Dave Haunty DAH5312@hotmail.com

This letter is being sent to you because you have reserved a room at the Crossroads Inn, the Sleep Inn, or have expressed an interest in attending reunion events in the Quantico area. . The Quantico segment is open to all reunion attendees, and I urge you to pass on this information to anyone you believe might have an interest in these events.

The majority of the Board has determined that the main reunion will be held in the Washington, DC area. However, there are many of us who would like to stay in Quantico and voted for the 2009 reunion to be held at Quantico. The plans for the 2009 reunion to be held in Quantico were 2 years in the making. There remains a strong interest in staying, and touring, Quantico.

The itinerary for Quantico will be as follows:

Wednesday – September 16th
1. Check in at the Crossroads Inn
2. Renewing friendships at a small Hospitality Room at the Crossroads Inn
3. Dinner – on your own, or with friends. Restaurant listing will be provided. The Clubs, adjacent to the Crossroads Inn does have a restaurant open to the public. There will be facilities open at the Clubs for liquid refreshments.

Thursday – September 17th

2. There are local restaurants that serve breakfast, if you want a full meal

Stoney, I don't think there is any thing in place on the 7th Eng. web site that could be used for this. I'll ask Mike Moran if he could do an announcement on his 3rd Bridge site. S.F Dave Haunty

Mac, Dave...
Major FYI...A fellow Massachusetts Vietnam Vet and member of the 7th Engr. Bn was Al(ius) J Svikla. He is, or was on the roster and that was how I'd found him. We went to PI together (Plt. 178, Aug.'65-Nov.'65) and were also bunkmates.

While in Vietnam, he was severely wounded by AK fire and, upon discharge from the Corps, returned home, only to move permanently to Key West, Florida.
I received many e-mails from him and even visited him for a week a couple of years ago, at his request. Since that time, he had to have a pacemaker inserted and still had to deal with complications from his stomach wound.

Today, I received an e-mail from his brother stating that, yesterday 08 April, Al died of a myocardial infarction. He was 60 yrs of age.

I know the re-union is a long way off yet but could this information be included on the website roster and another page added to the 7th Eng. Re-union Wall? Or is there something which would preclude this in the 'rules'?
